If you crochet or make "warm" things you know that when summer time comes and you are pretty much loss as to what to make. I would sit outside in 80 degree weather and crochet a hat that would sit in my stockpile until September. After a couple months doing this I came across a group that helped out our local babies. Newborns in Need is a non-profit organization that provides free blankets, hats, booties, care items, bereavement items, diapers, etc. to moms in need. I was able to join my local chapter and started by making hats.
One of things I remembered from our NICU stay was the handmade hats and blankets that where given to my little girl. They even had quilts covering the isolates that the tiniest babies were in. It made my day to see that someone cared enough to make something for my 1lb baby, and guess what, the hats fit!! (Another issue with micro-preemies is that the clothing is extremely big). We have a few hats in her keepsake box and a couple blankets. My other daughter fell in love with a blanket that was donated to us by the Linus Project, another non-profit organization that makes blankets and gives to hospitals for sick children.
By making these hats and blankets, bibs and burial items, for my local group I am not only giving back and providing comfort but I'm hoping that people dealing with the day to day struggle of finding warm things for their babies knows that there are people out there that care and just want to help.
If anyone would like to donate or would like more information you can contact me or the website is newbornsinneed.org
