This is the perfect hat for fall, and can be customized to be a slouch or beanie style depending on the look you want.
I used an H hook (5 mm)
Approx. 1/2 a skein of Red Heart With Love Chocolate Brown
Abbreviations: CH - Chain
HDC - Half Double Crochet
st - Stitch
SC - Single Crochet
HDC2TOG - Half Double Crochet 2 together
sl st - Slip Stitch
The hat is made in 3 pieces, you start with a flat piece that you can think of as an ear warmer.
Part 1:
Row 1: Chain 24, In the 2nd CH from the hook do 3HDC, 1 HDC in the next 4 stitches, skip 2 st, 1 HDC in each of the next 4 st, 3HDC in same st, 1 HDC in next 4 st. CH 2 Turn.
Row 2: 2HDC in same st, 1 HDC in next 3 st, skip 2, 1 HDC in next 4 st, 3HDC in next st, 1 HDC in next 4 st, skip 2, 1 HDC in next 4 st. CH 2 turn
Row 3 - 42: Alternate rows 1 and 2 until band wraps around head comfortably.
Slip stitch ends together to make a circle.
Part 2:
Now we are going to close the top of the hat. Pick one side as the top and you will be putting a HDC all the around the top of the hat. I had 57 stitches, I made mine a little bigger on top.
Row 1-2: 1 HDC in each stitch all the way around sl st to join each round.
Row 3: CH 1 HDC in same st, 1 HDC in next 2 stitches, HDC2TOG, 1 HDC in next 3 stitches, HDC2TOG, repeat until end of row. sl st CH 1
Row 4: Repeat row 3
Row 5: 1 HDC, HDC2TOG until end of row. sl st to join, CH1
Continue 1 HDC, HDC2TOG until you are able to close the top of your hat.
Part 3:
Turn your attention to the open side of your hat.
Row 1 - 3: SC 1 in each st around hat, the more single crochets you do around this side the looser it will be on your forehead.
