I get a lot of pins sent to me and a lot of requests for baby booties. The problem with these booties is....how do you know how big the newborn babies feet are going to be? Tiny? Long? Wide? Well I have the answer, for girls feet anyway. And for boots. (I'm working on the Mary Jane style). You can make the most stylish pair of little girl booties and attach a lace in the back!! How simple is that? Sure it may not go with every outfit or they might have chubby calves but its an easy fix, and it allows mom to be able to use them for a little longer.
I also have a go to bootie pattern that is easy and can be used for any size baby and any type of shoe.
Ready?
My go to hook is a size H/5.00mm. If you want them smaller then you can go down a hook size.
And any type of yarn will work with this pattern.
Chain 9 for newborn (tiny) or Chain 12 for 3-6 mos.
2 DC in 3rd chain from hook, DC to last chain, 6 DC in the last chain
Working on opposite side of previous row (unworked side of chain), DC in each stitch, in last stitch do 3DC in that stitch, slip stitch to beginning. ch 1 Look like an oval? It should.
HDC in same stitch as chain,2HDC in next 2 stitches, HDC in next 5-7 stitches, Depending on the size you are going for this number will determine the number of HDC you do, find the the middle stitch at the "toe" end of the oval. That is your middle stitch. Work 2HDC in 6 stitches to form the toe. (middle stitch will be #3), DC to last 2 stitches, 2HDC in last 2 stitches. slip stitch to join, chain 1
HDC in back loops only all the way around slip stitch to join, chain 1. This forms the sole of your booties.
HDC in next 7-9 stitches, DC2TOG in the next 8 stitches, Same thing here, find middle stitch and count back 8 then start the DC2TOG. HDC to end of round and slip stitch to join, chain 1. This starts the top of the shoe.
HDC to beginning of preivous decrease, DC2TOG in next 4 stitches, HDC to end of round slip stitch to join, ch 1.
STOP here if you are doing Mary Jane style, For boots Continue.
HDC to beginning of preivous decrease, DC2TOG in next 2 stitches, HDC around, slip stitch to join. Chain 1
SC in each stitch around. slip stitch to join, chain 2
DC in each stitch around, slip stitch to join, chain 2
DC in each stitch around, slip stitch to join, chain 1
SC in each stitch around, slip stitch to join, Finish Off.
Want Laces? I cut 2 pieces of ribbon about 8-10" and thread it through the back portion of the heel starting at the first DC and ending just under the last SC. Mom can move it if it needs to be tighter. There you go! My go to basic bootie pattern.
